I just started going for it and tried to keep this guy fast (1hr.). Trying to focus on shapes and strong starts.
4th of July Weekend
My girl and I headed down to Los Angeles for the weekend. On the plane I decided to try to complete some speedies for as long as my computer could tolerate. It was a quite a challenge considering that the airlines like to cram there economy passengers in like chickens. All said, flying Virgin America still has its advantages, like TED Talks lectures for FREE! These paintings were all done in short 30 to 40 minute periods. I have been having fun doing them.
The paintings on the bottom were inspired by some paintings with a similar color palette. I just had to get it out of my system and they were a blast.

Mobility VIP
While I was still in school at Art Center I had a great time working on a project with the grad industrial design department. It was both entertaining and socially responsible, which was rewarding.
The idea for the project was that each designer was given a deck of playing cards that would ultimately drive design. This helped to create back story. Chosen at random, each card described a small segment of the infrastructure of a future world like key political changes, population changes and disease epidemics. The eerie thing was that all the cards were relevant to what could potentially happen in the future should society make certain key and pivotal decisions.
If you would like to learn more about it, and I highly recommend checking it out with some of the other cool artwork on the site, it can be found at:
Honda: One to the Power of Four
This is actually old news, but something recently came up that reminded me of a project that I worked on while at the Honda Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena. The first assignment was to work on this concept called one to the power of four, a mega car that splits into four smaller cars to save energy. Some may be asking how that works. The big idea was a kind of organized ride sharing where the vehicles bond together when convenient and break apart when their routes go in different directions. Anyhow, this project was submitted for the Los Angeles Auto Show of 2007 and recently made its way into the June 2008 Dwell Architecture Magazine (pg. 189). I will post the link when it becomes available, but for now, you can check it out on a car blog:
Rent-A-Ruminant
One day as I was on my way home, I noticed some goats grazing alongside the hill. Apparently, they were hired guns to help eat the unwanted greenery in a environmentally friendly way. I had never seen anything like it before. I had to be careful to not get to entranced by the goats to avoid getting electrically shocked by the fence.
This is Bob. Bob is a goat. He is the byproduct of my walk home…….Bob’s a friendly guy.
Triton Tranquility
I submitted this piece for a gnomon competition and won. Yay! There were many talented artist that had participated and I feel really fortunate for winning the first prize, 40 Gnomon Workshop DVD’s. Special thanks goes out to Alex Alvarez, Gnomon Workshop and those at the organization for making this competition possible. The link for competition results can be found at the following location:
Observations of Chroma
Since Moving to Seattle, I have been going on walks around the neighboorhood. These exteriors are some residences that can be found near my house on my route towards the park. It makes for a great opportunity to bust out some quick studies of light at different times of day. The studies were 30 minute speed paintings to observe color.
The interior is the inside of my friend Charlie’s dwelling, where many good meals and much laughter has been experienced. It was done as a sort of thank you for his hospitality.
Intro to the World of Blogging
This may sound strange, but this is my first attempt at blogging. Well, okay, not quite the first time, but this is my first legitamate attempt at creating and maintaining some forum for expressing my thoughts, works and experiences. I am excited to embark on this journey and look forward to publishing interesting observations of many kinds.
The following are some examples of ways that I have been keeping busy and some strange events that are going on around me. I have just moved to Seattle, where I am really enjoying the people, the air, and dare I say, the weather.
This is a sketchup model of the interior of the house I am living in Seattle. It is an English Tudor house over 100 years old and is approximately 1400 sq./ft. I built a Sketchup model that is built to the scale of the house and my furniture. Moving is a lot of work, so I made this model to save my girlfriend and I some energy through previewing different furniture scenarios before expending the efforts to physically move them ourselves. Be it laziness, or ingenuity, I am not sure. I will let you decide.
